Which 21st-century skill do you think will be most critical for your future students, and why?
The 21st-century skill I find most essential is curiosity. It is so important for students, but especially young students, to use their curiosity to help them explore and learn the world around them. By exploring their curiosity, students are able to make mistakes, grow from them, and become autonomous learners.
How did creating your Portrait of a Graduate shape or refine your vision for your classroom?
This infographic helped me further recognize the importance of teaching students concepts and skills that expand beyond the curriculum. The outside world is more than just math, science, reading, etc. It excels through people with compassion, leadership, creativity, etc.
What decisions did you make during the design process to reflect your educational values?
During the design process, I chose skills and definitions that emphasize student voice, independence, and compassion. For example, I included empathy and curiosity because I want my students to not only think critically but also connect meaningfully with others and pursue learning for its own sake. I also used simple, clear language and paired each skill with a supportive visual to make the message accessible and memorable. These decisions reflect my belief that education should be inclusive, student-centered, and focused on preparing children for both academic success and responsible citizenship.
